Privacy Policy

This page explains what BeSpeak Books does with the information you send us, how long we keep it, and how you can ask us to change or remove it. We are a small publishing studio, so the same people who read your manuscript also handle your privacy questions.

Information we collect

When you use the contact form or email us directly, we receive the details you choose to share: your name, email address, phone number if you include it, and the message itself, which often contains a project description, word count, genre or a sample of your manuscript. We also collect basic technical data that any web server records, such as browser type, device category, approximate region and the pages you visited. If analytics tools are active on the site, they record aggregated events like page views and referral sources rather than the content of your messages.

How we use it

Your details are used to answer your enquiry, to prepare a manuscript review and a clear quote, and to keep the project correspondence in one place while we work together. We do not sell your information, and we do not add you to a mailing list because you asked a question. Technical and analytics data help us understand which pages authors actually read and where the site is slow or confusing.

Cookies and tracking

The site may set cookies for basic functionality and for analytics. These are small files stored by your browser; they do not identify you by name. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time, and the site will still work for reading pages and sending a message. Where consent is required by law, we ask for it before non-essential cookies are placed, and you can withdraw that consent later by clearing cookies or contacting us.

Sharing with service providers

We rely on a small number of third-party processors to run the site and handle correspondence: a hosting provider, an email or form delivery service, and analytics software. These providers only see the data needed to perform their task and are bound by their own privacy terms. We do not pass your manuscript to anyone outside the studio without your written agreement. If a project moves toward print, your files are shared with the Canadian printer only after you approve that step.

How long we keep it

Enquiry messages and project files are kept for as long as we need them to answer you and, if we work together, for the duration of the project plus a reasonable period afterwards so we can respond to follow-up questions. You can ask us to delete your correspondence and files at any point, and we will do so unless we are required to keep a record for accounting or legal reasons.

Your rights

You can ask to see the personal data we hold about you, request a correction, ask for a portable copy, or ask us to delete it. You can also object to certain processing or withdraw consent you gave earlier. If you are in the European Union, the GDPR gives you these rights directly; if you are in California, the CCPA gives you comparable rights, including the right not to be discriminated against for exercising them. Accuracy and honest claims

We describe our editing, layout and print-ready services plainly. We do not promise bestseller status, guaranteed sales, awards or specific review outcomes, and we do not use fake endorsements, invented client names or manufactured urgency to encourage you to sign. Any example project mentioned on this site is presented as an illustration of the kind of work we do, not as a claim about your own results. If something on the site looks misleading, tell us and we will correct it.

Questions authors ask before they send a manuscript

Most of what people want to know comes down to the same handful of things: what happens first, how long editing takes, who owns the finished book and what it costs to get there. Here are the answers we give most often.

What happens after I send my manuscript?

We read it through once before anything else. That first pass is a manuscript assessment: a structural read that looks at how the book holds together, where the argument or narrative drifts, and which chapters are carrying their weight. You get written notes back, and then we build a chapter-by-chapter outline together. Nothing gets edited until you have seen that outline and agreed it reflects the book you meant to write.

Do you work with first-time authors?

That is most of who we work with, along with family historians putting together a local record and business owners who want a practical guide in print. You do not need a polished draft or a publishing background. You do need a finished manuscript, or close to one, because structural editing works on material that already exists rather than on an idea.

How many rounds of revision are included?

Projects move through two revision rounds before typesetting. The first round usually deals with structure, chapter order and anything that needs to be added or cut. The second round is closer work on language, consistency and the smaller things a reader notices without being able to name. After that we move into layout, and changes at that stage are handled differently because the pages are already set.

Which formats can the finished book be prepared for?

We prepare print-ready files for paperback, hardcover and ebook editions. Each one has its own requirements: trim size, margins and page count matter for print, while an ebook needs reflowable text and working navigation. If you are not sure which to start with, it helps to decide before layout begins, because format choices shape how the interior is typeset and how the cover is built.

Who owns the rights and the royalties?

You do. Authors keep full rights and royalties on their work. We handle the editing, layout, cover direction and file preparation, and we can also take care of ISBN registration and print-on-demand setup through Canadian printers. Registration is not the same thing as copyright, and a print-on-demand account is not a publishing contract, so it is worth understanding both before you commit to a printer.

What does it cost, and when do I find out?

We do not quote from a template, because a 90-page poetry collection and a 300-page family history are not the same job. Book a manuscript review and you get a clear quote before any work begins. Talk to the studio before you commit to anything

If you have a finished draft and a stack of questions about what comes next, the first conversation is the right place to start. Write to the studio, call during working hours, or send a note by post. You do not need a polished pitch or a finished chapter outline. A short description of the manuscript, the genre and what you hope the finished book to be is enough for a first read.

Authors who write in usually mention two or three things: where the draft currently stands, which format they are leaning toward, and whether they already have an ISBN. None of that has to be settled before you get in touch. It simply helps the reply be useful rather than generic.
