Terms of Service
These terms describe how BeSpeak Books works with authors, what each side is responsible for, and where the limits of that work sit. They apply to every manuscript assessment, editing stage, layout job and print-ready file we prepare.
What the studio provides
BeSpeak Books is a small Canadian publishing studio. We take on structural editing, line editing, proofreading, interior layout, cover direction and print-ready file preparation for paperback, hardcover and ebook editions. We also handle ISBN registration and print-on-demand setup through Canadian printers. Every project opens with a manuscript assessment and a chapter-by-chapter outline, then moves through two revision rounds before typesetting. The scope of your project is the scope written into your quote, and nothing outside it is included by default.
Your rights as the author
You keep full rights and royalties to your work. We do not claim ownership of your manuscript, your title, your cover concept or the finished files. We edit, lay out and prepare files for printing on your behalf, and once the project is complete you are free to take those files to another printer or platform. If you later want to move your book elsewhere, we will not hold the registration or the metadata hostage.
What we need from you
Editing and layout depend on you supplying a complete manuscript, responding to revision notes within a reasonable period, and confirming decisions about trim size, format and cover direction when asked. Delays in feedback push the schedule back, and repeated changes after a stage is signed off may require a new quote. You are also responsible for the accuracy of names, dates, quotations and permissions inside your own text, particularly in memoir, local history and family projects.
Revisions and approvals
Each project includes two revision rounds before typesetting. A revision round covers corrections and adjustments within the agreed scope; it is not an open invitation to rewrite the book. Once a stage is approved, later changes are treated as new work and quoted separately. This keeps the schedule honest and prevents the file from drifting while the printer is waiting.
Limits of our responsibility
We prepare files to the specifications a printer asks for, but we do not control the printer, the paper stock, the binding or the delivery timeline once a job leaves our hands. We are not responsible for sales results, reviews, distribution outcomes or how a retailer chooses to list your book. We also cannot guarantee that a manuscript will be accepted by a specific store, award or agent, because those decisions are not ours to make.
Ending a project
Either side can end a project in writing. If you stop the work partway through, you pay for the stages already completed and receive the files produced up to that point. If we stop the work, we hand over what has been finished and explain the reason. We may also decline or end a project if the material falls outside the genres we work in or asks us to do something we cannot do properly.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as our services change. The version in effect when your project begins is the one that applies to that project, unless we agree otherwise in writing. Continued use of this site after an update means you accept the current version. Questions about these terms, or about a specific clause, can be sent to info@bespeakbooks.com or raised by phone at (300) 732-8836.
